After thirty-six years in church ministry, including five senior pastorates, I now have time to give matters of life a second thought.
I was born to a coach and a teacher of special needs children in Nashville, Tennessee. My amazing wife Laurie and I celebrate thirty-eight years of marriage this year; and we are the proud parents of two children, Katherine and Preston. Katherine has blessed our family with her husband Eric and their three children, James, Ellie, and Darcy. (You will probably hear about them along the way!). Preston is married to Faina, and the two also bring great joy to our family.
I was graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with Master of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. My major discipline in my Ph.D. studies was Christian Ethics, with secondary studies in theology and homiletics.
We followed our calling to Texas, Missouri, and West Virginia. I enjoyed teaching hundreds of seminarians in three different seminaries in the subjects of ethics, preaching, theology, and leadership. My writing opportunities included authoring two books of sermons, developing Bible study lessons in ten commentary works, and responding to church ethical dilemmas, which were published in several Baptist publications around the country under the title, “Right or Wrong?” As a member of the Commission on Christian Ethics of the Baptist World Alliance, I contributed to professional papers that were presented in Izmir, Turkey, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I contribute occasionally to an online devotional entitled “Lectionary to Life” through the Center for Congregational Ethics.
My greatest celebration of faith occurred when our daughter and son accepted Christ as Lord and Savior. My greatest anticipation of hope is praying for my grandchildren, James, Ellie, and Darcy, to accept Christ as well. My greatest blessing of love is that God brought Laurie into my life and graced us with decades of ministry and life together.
